What is the Purpose in Life? – Discovering Life’s Meaning

What is the Purpose in Life? – Discovering Life’s Meaning

What IS the purpose in life?

Have you ever asked yourself this question?

It certainly does seem on many occasions like there IS no meaning or purpose to all of the things that go on in our lives.

Furthermore, if there is a purpose, is it possible to even know what it is?

AND if someone claims to know what it is, do they really know?

This is undoubtedly a profound question, and I don’t claim to be any life expert with all the answers or anything, but I’ve seen, learned, and experienced enough that I feel comfortable being able to have a conversation about it.

So what do you say?

Would you like to take a deep dive with me for a few minutes and try to tackle this beast of a question?

First, the Truth is There IS a Purpose to Life for Us to Find

Yes, it’s true.

There IS a purpose to life.

And before you get excited, no, this is not going to be some kind of attempt to get you to join a particular religion or something or to get you to ‘believe’ anything.

I just want to be real with you.

I’m one of those people who likes to cut to the chase and just get down to the brass tacks of things, you know what I mean?

The fact is that this question has been my #1 passion and pursuit in my life, and so I have spent A LOT of time reading, talking to people, sitting with spiritual masters, meditating, going to seminars, studying different religions…..the whole nine yards.

And I have found a few things through direct personal experience.

So I’m going to try to take everything I’ve learned and experienced over the years and boil it all down to as simple and objective of a statement as I possibly can.

And that is that:  the purpose in life is to find happiness and fulfillment that transcends your wildest expectations.

The purpose is for us to find REAL and unshakable happiness and fulfillment in our lives.

I mean if you’re honest with yourself, isn’t that pretty much what we’re all after anyway?

When we come into these lives of ours as little children, aren’t we naturally filled to the brim with a mysterious pure joy and happiness?

And then as we get older and have more life experiences, this light inside of us starts to fade out to some degree.

Many of us really believe that growing up and getting wiser is learning that there IS no magic in life and that happiness, lasting happiness anyway, doesn’t really seem to exist.

When we start feeling like this we might have a sense of unhappiness, hopelessness, or depression that life is meaningless and that there is no purpose.

Many times we find ourselves in a position where we are just kind of drudging through our life going to work, coming home, you know, going through the motions just to wake up the next day and do it all over.

Many of us haven’t necessarily given up on life or on living our lives, but we have sort of lost hope or faith that true happiness or true love even exists at all and that life is nothing but misery and drudgery mixed with periods of time where things seem to be ‘alright’.

But I’m here to tell you that none of this is true.

The happiness, the love, the LIGHT you had as a child is REAL.

Not only that, but it CAN be found and you WILL eventually find it.

And yes this is usually the time where you’ve got to start thinking in terms of some kind of spirituality.

But the truth is when we’re talking about things like Moksha (Hinduism), Nirvana (Buddhism), the Promised Land (Judaism), the Kingdom of Heaven etc., we’re talking about that place where this unfathomable, endless, BOUNDLESS, happiness, love and bliss exists.

Yeah, You DO Have to Get LITTLE Spiritual in Order to Find Real Happiness and Joy

Ok, so you DO have to get involved with spirituality in some form or fashion in order to fulfill the purpose in life and to find real happiness.

But what does that really mean?

Well, I guess the things I’m about to say could be seen as a bit heretical or blasphemous by some, but the truth is, spirituality is simply a set of disciplines for your mind in order for you to be able to reap the harvest of unlimited and boundless happiness fulfillment joy and love.

Does that make sense?

There’s a science to finding happiness.

And this science is really what spirituality is all about.

Ok so this is where some might consider the things I’m about to say as a bit blasphemous, but I do wholeheartedly believe this and have experienced it myself.

The truth is the spiritual path you walk doesn’t matter.

Whether we’re talking about Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or even off the beaten path spiritualities of light, they are ALL about disciplining oneself enough and following certain scientific principles that WILL ultimately yield unlimited happiness joy and fulfillment.

I mean if you want to get down to brass tacks this is really what it’s all about.

So yeah, if you want to find happiness and bliss, there ARE a few guidelines and disciplines to follow in order to make it happen, but it ALL comes down to love, compassion, forgiveness, and non-judgment.

Make sense?

You know in the Bible Jesus says that we are to love God with all our minds hearts souls and wills and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

He also says that we shouldn’t judge others, UNLESS we want to judge ourselves as well.

Well honest to God this is really all there is to it.

And if you strip away all the dogma and rituals and all the brainwashing and all the nonsense and craziness from religion, it’s really all about love and expanding that love to encompass all of reality and all people.

You don’t even really have to have a religion in order to love and work on cultivating this love within yourself you know.

All it takes is a little focus and discipline and some work on yourself.

You don’t need to wear any special clothes or be part of a certain group or club in order to love and practice non-judgment or forgiveness.

You could even be an atheist and if you simply practiced the art and science of LOVE, loving God or the source of all life, loving yourSELF, as well as your neighbors……honestly EVERYTHING, you will find this happiness and fulfillment we’re talking about here.

So can you see it?

Can you see the silver thread through all this regarding spirituality, happiness, and the need to simply discipline oneself to be more loving and nonjudgmental rather than full of fear and judgment?

The coolest part about it all for me is that you don’t have to BELIEVE any of what I’m saying here, you can experience this for yourself in your own life, regardless of what path you’d like to follow.

All roads eventually lead to the bliss and happiness within, just as all rivers ultimately lead to the ocean.

If You Work on Yourself a Bit, You WILL Find the Happiness You Seek

Instead of being all dogmatic and ‘believing’ things, I have found that it’s a bit more helpful and useful to simply think of all this as we would think about a garden.

You know, in order to have a nice healthy fruitful garden, you’ve got to cultivate it.

You’ve got to spend a little regular committed time with it.

You’ve got to make sure the garden is getting enough light, water, nutrients.

You’ve got to tend to the garden by getting rid of weeds and pests.

And when you do this, eventually you’ll find that your garden has given you something in return such as vegetables or flowers, or fruits if you’ve planted some type of fruit tree.

Well, the same applies to you and your happiness.

The truth is, there very much is a garden inside of you, and when you become aware of and cultivate YOUR inner garden, eventually what you will see is that your inner garden will yield the fruits of happiness, joy, peace, and even unlimited bliss eventually.

But to do this you’ve got to make the decision to do so.

You’ve got to watch your thoughts and remove the weeds of negative and irrational thinking and replace them with compassionate, non-judgmental, and loving thoughts.

You’ve got to temper your desires and your sensual attractions as these are like pests that will hamper your inner garden from being able to yield the fruits of joy and happiness you’re looking for.

I know for a lot of people religion and spirituality doesn’t really make a lot of sense.

But I myself really like this garden metaphor because I think it really makes all this simple, understandable, AND practical.

When you view yourself like a garden and give yourself proper light, air, nutrients, and get rid of the weeds and pests in your inner garden in the form of negative thoughts and actions, bad habits, etc, you WILL find happiness.

You will be able to reconnect with that natural indescribable bliss and joy that you had when you were a child.

You are Worth the Effort

So, yes, there IS a little bit of effort involved if you want to find happiness and fulfillment in your life.

And I know that we really don’t like to hear that for pretty much anything!

You know we don’t like the idea of having to eat right or go to the gym.

Even in relationships a lot of us don’t want to really put in much work into them and we want them to be all fun and play.

But we KNOW in every other area of life, it’s CRUCIAL to put forth a little bit of consistent, regular effort in order to achieve ANYTHING in life.

And if we want to achieve happiness, we’ve got to work on ourselves.

We’ve got to become aware of our thoughts and feelings, and start loving and tending to our inner garden.

Many of us don’t like ourselves or don’t think we are worth any time or effort.

But I am here to tell you that you ARE.

You ARE worth happiness and even LOVE.

It’s fine to have relationships of course, and to have nice things in life and have fun.

But if you really want that rich, whole, feeling of fulfillment, peace, bliss and joy, you’ve GOT to do a little work on yourself.

You’ve GOT to make yourself and your self care a PRIORITY.

I promise you when you do it won’t be long before you start to feel a little peace and joy bubble up from within in a mysterious way, and you may even catch yourself smiling without really knowing why.

And I’ve got some more good news.

The MORE you work on yourself and cultivate yourself, the deeper, richer, and more all encompassing this happiness joy and peace will come for you.

In other words, in truth there IS no end to the depths of love bliss and peace that are available for you to tap into and experience.

Then you’ll be like, wait a minute, are you telling me the joy I seek really IS within me and has been there this whole time?

YES.

In the east there is a general awareness of the need to go within to find the bliss that is there through various forms of meditation.

But even in the Bible Jesus says that the Kingdom of Heaven is within you.

Do you think he was just joking around?

He wasn’t.

The Kingdom of Heaven IS within you.

You’ve just got to do a little digging and cultivating of yourself to find it.

That’s it!

Wrapping it Up

So let’s recap a bit here.

The takeaways from all this are:

  • Life DOES indeed have a purpose
  • The purpose of life is for you to find happiness and bliss that never ends
  • It IS possible for you to find this for yourself
  • You’ve just got to work on yourself a little just as you’d work on a garden to find it

AND you ARE worth the effort.

Finding happiness, peace, bliss, joy and undying LOVE IS the purpose of life, and it IS your birth right and eventual destiny in order to find this for yourself.

It’s REAL.

You’ve just got to believe in yourself a bit, love yourself, and work on yourself.

That’s all there is to it.

Master yourself, and you will find everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more.
